A native of Bombay, India, Samir Dhurandhar developed a passion for cooking with family and friends at the early age of thirteen. An early professional position found him working as a junior sous chef at the Sheraton Hotel in Bombay before coming to the USA in 1990 to study at the famed Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. Following graduation in 1992, he held executive chef positions at John Harvard’s Brew House in Long Island, Heartland Brewery, and Sfuzzi’s in New York, before coming to Dallas in 1999 to open Nick&Sam’s Steakhouse as Executive Chef.
Currently, Samir, as Corporate Chef and partner, oversees the Steakhouse as well as Nick&Sam’s Grill , a popular Uptown bistro featuring a more casual menu in a comfortable setting, and Coal Vines, a new concept serving coal fired pizza and great wine.
Award winning credits include the American Institute of Wine & Food’s Chef 2000 award, the 2000 Best Caesar Salad in Dallas awarded by the American Institute of Wine & Food. Chef Samir also was recognized for having the best wine/food matched menu during Dallas’ largely popular culinary event, Restaurant Week, sponsored by radio station KRLD. Under his watchful eye, Nick&Sam’s wine list has received numerous annual designations of Awards of Excellence by Wine Spectator Magazine and is a 2008 winner of the American Academy of Hospitality Science’s Five Diamond Award.
USA Today called Samir’s menu for Nick&Sam’s “well done is the easy verdict.” And Dallas Morning News food critic Dotty Griffith claimed “Dallas dining soars far beyond cowboy cuisine” while crediting Samir with putting a “modern spin on the steakhouse”…by serving “wild mussels steamed in chardonnay, grilled sea bass with cioppino and molasses-glazed quail in addition to chophouse standards.”
Exclaiming his passion for both food and Big D, Samir says “Dallas has been good to me. I have a wonderful job, work for great people, met a wonderful girl and married her (wife Lori), and have two beautiful children—Mia and Cole.”
“Never take your guests for granted. Take the best of care of them, and everything else will fall into place.”
In Dallas, Texas, and at the helm of Nick&Sam’s, everything has fallen into place for Samir Dhurandhar.
